I'm Thankful for Green Day

Things have been feeling a little too serious lately. Let's face it, it's been a rough year for so many of us. I keep hearing about folks who just can't find a job or have been laid off. My work and profession in general has had its ups and downs. It's easy in times like these to feel down; sorry for ourselves. Oprah, like many other advice givers -- remember Ann Landers? -- tells us to give thanks; write a gratitude journal or list of the things in life to be thankful for. This is good advice. And I'm not going to let Oprah have all of the credit. Giving thanks is not a new idea. In fact, I think it's been around for centuries at least. What to give thanks for? There's the triad -- health, family and friends. These three go without saying but can't be understated. I'm thankful that Husband, Charlie and I are all in good health. The people in our lives are what make life worth living. Besides those three, what else am I thankful for?

1. A home, roof over my head, shelter from the elements, with a place for the dog by the fireplace. (And we're thankful for Chance the dog.)

2. I'm thankful that chocolate, its concept, mass marketing and distribution, was invented before I was born and all I have to do is go to my local store to take my pick of this magic.

3. I'm thankful to be a woman in a society that has evolved to the point where I have rights.

4. As a follow-on to number 3, I'm thankful that I'm not a barefoot serf living in feudal Europe dodging chamber pots and cow pies.

5. I'm thankful for new music by Green Day and that The World Famous KROQ is still around -- a radio station from my younger days -- even though the New Wave music I started out listening to is now "Classic KROQ."

6. I'm thankful that my son goes to a very good school.

7. I'm thankful that there are good people in the world who are providing Thanksgiving dinners for the homeless and less fortunate. People care about other people even when we have trouble paying for our own groceries.

8. I'm thankful that my weaknesses inevitably turn out to be Husband's strengths.

9. I'm thankful to have a middle-schooler who still expresses joy.

10. I'm thankful for my friend and email pen pal.

11. And, always and forever, I'm thankful for the Beatles.

We all have things to be thankful for even when it may not feel that way. What are you thankful for?
