Weddings
Saturday, April 10, 2010      |     The Internal Stuggle
There are weddings and then there are weddings. Essentially, they come in two forms: There's the obligatory wedding -- the work associate you're not particularly close to, or your husband's second cousin's wedding; the ones with the forgettable (or unforgettable) soloists; and, my personal favorite, the one with the combat photographer who mooned all of the guests while straddling the altar steps. (And while the experience was particularly onerous at the time, it's given me oh so much material for stories over the years. In hindsight, it was worth it.) Then there are the weddings of those near and dear, the people that make life brighter and more interesting. Those are the weddings you go to because you want to be there to witness the bride and groom promise to love and cherish each other. My personal favorite part is where the groom promises to clean up after himself and the bride promises never to wear curlers to bed. (Fair is fair.)
Today’s wedding is definitely of the latter and (for us) started with a simple email simply titled “She said “Yes.””
It was with particular regret that we missed the wedding of our dear friend. Unfortunately, life circumstances prevented us from attending, and it's not like we can take a raincheck. There are no do-overs. It's a once-in-a-lifetime event. The most we can do is to wish our dear friends a life together that is filled with love, joy and laughter. Here is our little gift to the happy couple:
When Alan Met Sooyee
When Alan met Sooyee, he thought she was beautiful and smart and in
possession of the certain special qualities that enabled her to believe him
to be the funniest man in the world.
When Sooyee met Alan, she thought he was tall and handsome, in a maybe nontraditional way. Sooyee laughed at Alan's jokes, even when they weren't all that funny, because that is true love.
Before Alan proposed to Sooyee, he rehearsed the scenario in his mind over
and over again. In the restaurant, when she said yes, Alan sprouted wings
and flew around the room, high over the tops of the other diners. In a very
quick moment, Sooyee joined him and the two held hands, hovering just under
the ceiling tiles, looking like a Marc Chagall painting.
Then, on a beautiful spring day, when the cherry blossoms were in bloom, Alan
and Sooyee were married. Sooyee was always beautiful and Alan was always
funny, and they lived happily ever after, because that is true love.
